The Difference Between Water Mitigation and Water Damage Restoration

When dealing with water damage, it is important to act fast. The quicker you begin the mitigation and restoration process, the more likely you can preserve the property. Although water mitigation and restoration services are similar, they are two separate processes that happen one after the other.

Water Mitigation: What Is It?

Water mitigation is the step before water restoration. This process stops the course of water and removes the water as quickly as possible so restoration services can begin. After the water flow is stopped, mitigation specialists assess the level of mitigation based on the water’s color. Clear water indicates clean water, typically from a pipe. Gray water points to water that has been used, typically from a washing machine or dishwasher. Black water is the most severe, indicating contamination and pollution from waste. The darker the water, the higher the level of sanitation and decontamination needed. After assessing the damage level, mitigation specialists extract water, dry out the property as best as possible, and board up the property if necessary.

Water Damage Restoration: What Is It?

Once water mitigation is complete, the restoration process begins. This process fixes and restores the home as best as possible. Wet drywall and flooring are removed to prevent mold growth, and doors, windows, and the roof are repaired or replaced if needed. During this process, specialists also check for mold. If any mold is found, it is immediately removed. To decrease the chance of mold growth, the property’s moisture is tested. When restoration is done, all aspects of the property should be dry.
